Privacy notice

Last updated 2 October 2026

Own a Piece of the Internet is the controller of personal data collected through this website. This notice explains what we collect and why, under UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018).

What we collect

  • Purchase details: the email address you give Stripe at checkout, payment identifiers, amount and date. Card details are handled by Stripe and never reach our servers.
  • Your submission: the image, name, tagline and website link you provide. Once approved this is published on the wall and is public.
  • Abuse prevention: a one-way, salted hash of your IP address while you hold a reservation, so one network can’t reserve the whole wall. We do not store your raw IP address with reservations.
  • Technical logs kept by our hosting providers for security and reliability.
  • Your browser: a reservation key is saved in your browser’s local storage so you can resume checkout. It is not a tracking cookie and you can clear it at any time.

Why we use it (lawful bases)

  • To take payment and deliver your piece: performance of a contract.
  • To moderate content, prevent fraud and keep the service secure: legitimate interests.
  • To keep accounting and tax records: legal obligation.

We don’t sell personal data, and we don’t use it for third-party advertising.

Who we share it with

  • Stripe (payments), Supabase (database and file storage) and Vercel (hosting), acting on our behalf.
  • Professional advisers and authorities where legally required.

Some of these providers may process data outside the UK, under appropriate safeguards such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum.

How long we keep it

Purchase records: 6 years for accounting purposes. Published submissions: for as long as the piece is on the wall. Rejected submissions: until the replacement or refund is resolved. Abandoned (unpaid) reservations and drafts: periodically deleted, normally within 90 days.

Your rights

You can ask to access, correct or delete your personal data, object to or restrict its use, or ask for a copy. Email hello@ownapieceoftheinternet.com. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ico.org.uk).
